We’ve also included a simple guide for accessing your voice mail and familiar features like Caller ID, Call Forwarding, and 3-way Conferencing. And remember, you can also change your settings and access enhanced features online by logging on to your BroadVoice web portal.

Getting Started

What’s included:

BroadVoice Telephone Adapter

Equipment you will need:

Broadband Connection: DSL, cable modem, or other high-speed Internet connection
Router (optional): To share your broadband connection with more than one device. A router is not necessary if you only use one computer.
Traditional Analog Telephone

To use enhanced features, you will need:

Computer
Web Browser: MS Internet Explorer (ver. 4.x or higher) or Netscape Navigator (ver. 4.x or higher)

About the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter

The BroadVoice Telephone Adapter enables you to connect your phone and either one or
more computers to your broadband network. When connecting to a single computer, you do not need a router.

BEFORE PROCEEDING:
If you are using DSL that requires PPPoE authentication,
please follow these important steps.

Installing the Telephone Adapter on a SINGLE Computer

Power off your DSL or cable modem and computer
Insert the Ethernet cable into the WAN port. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into your DSL or cable modem.
Insert an end of another Ethernet cable into the LAN port. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer.
Insert the line from your telephone handset into the PHONE port of the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. Connect the other end of the telephone cable to a traditional analog telephone.
Apply power to DSL or cable modem.
Ensure proper status indicators are lit.
Plug the power adapter into the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. The LED on top of the adapter will blink for up to one minute.
Apply power to your computer.
You can now make calls! Pick up the phone receiver and listen for a dial tone.
If you do not have a dial tone, refer to the Troubleshooting portion of this document.

Network Connections, Single Computer

Installing the Telephone Adapter on MULTIPLE Computers

Power off your DSL or cable modem, router, and any devices connected to the router.
Insert the Ethernet cable into the WAN port. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into your DSL or cable modem.
Insert an end of another Ethernet cable into the LAN port. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your router. Connect your PC and all other network devices into the router.
Insert the line from your telephone handset into the PHONE port of the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. Connect the other end of the telephone cable to a traditional analog telephone.
Apply power to DSL or cable modem. Ensure proper status indicators are lit.
Plug the power adapter into the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. The LED on top of the adapter will blink for up to one minute.
Apply power to your router. Ensure proper status indicators are lit. Apply power to devices connected to the router.
You can now make calls! Pick up the phone receiver and listen for a dial tone.

Network Connections, Multiple Computers

Voice Messaging

Features

Flash Call Transfer: With the first party on the phone, click the flash or hang-up button once, dial the number you wish to transfer the call to, and then dial #. When the dialed party answers, click flash again to connect the two callers and hang up to drop out of the call.

Caller ID Blocking: Turn this service on or off for all calls and then selectively turn it back on or off by dialing *67 before you dial the call.

Anonymous Rejection: Reject calls from anonymous parties who have restricted their identity. Anonymous callers are notified that you will not accept calls from restricted callers. However, this feature does not apply to callers whose numbers are not available.

Cancel Call Waiting: To make an uninterrupted call, you can cancel call waiting by lifting the handset, dialing *70, and dialing your party. When you hang up, call waiting will be on for the next outgoing call.

3-way Conferencing: To initiate 3-way conferencing, dial the first party. When the first party answers, press the flash hook. Then, dial the third party and before or after the add-on party answers, press the flash hook to form a 3-way conference call.

Troubleshooting and Rebooting your Equipment

No Dial Tone	Check all connections to the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. Make sure that the LED on the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter is green when the phone is off hook. If not, ensure that you have an Internet connection. Reboot your equipment as described in "Rebooting Your Equipment."
Phone Does Not Ring	Check all connections to the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. Make sure the ring volume on the phone is properly adjusted. Reboot your equipment as described in "Rebooting Your Equipment."
Fast Busy Signal	Reboot your equipment as described in "Rebooting Your Equipment."
Can’t Enable DHCP (Windows 2000,ME, NT)	Select Start in the Windows task bar. Then select Settings, Control Panel, the Network icon, and the Ethernet Adapter icon (or Local Area Connection). Then select [Properties]. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Write down all of the information provided in the window. Select Obtain an IP address automatically to enable DHCP. Close all windows and reboot the computer.
Can’t Enable DHCP (Windows 95, 98)	Select Start in the Windows task bar. Then select Settings, Control Panel, and the Network icon. Select the Configuration tab. Select TCP/IP in the list of network components. Select the appropriate adapter associated with your computer’s Ethernet adapter. Select Properties and write down all of the information in the TCP/IP window that appears. Select Obtain an IP address automatically to enable DHCP. Close all windows and reboot the computer.
Can’t Enable DHCP (Windows XP)	Select Start in the Windows task bar. Then select the Network Connections icon (in Classic View), or select Network and Internet Connections and then Network Connections (in Category View). Select the Local Area Connection icon. Then select Properties, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then Properties. Write down all of the information provided in the window. Select the General tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Then select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. Select the Alternate Configuration tab and make sure that Automatic private IP address is selected. Select the General tab again and select [Advanced]. In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window, ensure that DHCP enabled is selected in the IP address section of the IP Settings tab. Do not check any settings in the Default gateways and Automatic metric box sections. Select the DNS tab and select Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes and Register this connection’s address in the DNS. Then select the WINS tab, ensure that the enable LNHOSTS lookup box is checked, and that [Default] is selected in the NetBIOS section. Then select OK. Close all windows and reboot the computer.
USB vs. Ethernet Port	If your broadband provider requires a USB connection instead of Ethernet, you must purchase a USB to Ethernet converter to connect to the BroadVoice Telephone Adapter. Most DSL/Cable modems permit use of only one port at a time, either the USB or Ethernet Port. The BroadVoice adapter should be connected to the Ethernet port from the DSL/Cable Modem via the adapter's WAN port and your PC connected to the adapter's LAN port. Use the USB port only if connecting to the adapter's WAN port with a USB to Ethernet Converter.

Rebooting Your Equipment
To reboot your equipment, do the following:

Power down your PC appropriately. Unplug the power to your BroadVoice Adapter, network router, and cable/DSL modem.
Wait the appropriate amount of time for your cable/DSL modem and router to reset.
Power up your cable/DSL modem and wait for it to start up completely before continuing.
Plug in and power up your BroadVoice Adapter. Wait until the LED on top of the adapter has completely stopped blinking. Please do not interrupt this process by picking up the telephone handset.
If using a network router, hub or switch, power it up and wait for it to start up completely before continuing. Otherwise, go to step 6.
Reboot your computer and determine that you have an Internet connection.
Pick up the phone handset to check for a dial tone.
