Installation of BYOD Devices:
Counterpath's XTen Soft Phone X - Lite

Counterpath's XTen softphone X-Lite can by used with BroadVoice BYOD Plans priced at $5.95 per month and up.

Counterpath's XTen Soft Phone - X-Lite

To configure the X-Lite softphone to work with BroadVoice, please complete the following steps.

While you may use a SIP softphone with BroadVoice, please remember that BroadVoice does not endorse any specific softphones, and does not provide support for softphone software. For software support with X-Lite or X-Pro, please visit the Counterpath/XTen support page.

Warning!

The soft client should NOT be activated when a phone adapter is currently active on the same account. Having more than one device active on your account at the same time will result in the account being suspended.

If your account has been suspended, please contact for assistance.

BroadVoice utilizes network authentication protocols for the security of your account. Therefore, you will need to input where indicated the 10 digit BroadVoice authentication password provided to you by a BroadVoice customer service representative. It is intended to prevent anyone other than you from configuring another device and making calls on your account at your expense. Your password may be reset upon your request or by a BroadVoice representative as needed.

BroadVoice permits only one device to be active per user account. Therefore, you must deactivate/disconnect any other devices from the BroadVoice number you plan to use with your softphone.

  1. Visit Counterpath's XTen web site to download the softphone application.
  2. Install and open the X-Lite application on your computer.
  3. Have the X-Lite skin displayed on your desk top
  4. Click on the Menu button (circled in red).
    Xten Menu Button
  5. From the Menu screen, double click on System Settings
  6. Double click on Network
  7. Configure the Network settings as follows:
    XTen Network Settings
  8. Edit the Provider DNS Server to: 147.135.0.6
  9. Click the BACK button.
  10. Double click on SIP Proxy
  11. Select Default. You can define up to nine additional SIP Proxies.
  12. Edit the following parameters

    a. Enabled: Yes
    b. Display Name: Your Name
    c. User Name: Your 10 digit BroadVoice number
    d. Authorization User: Your 10 digit BroadVoice number
    e. Password: Your 10 digit authentication Password generated by BroadVoice
    f. Domain/Realm: sip.broadvoice.com
    g. Sip Proxy (see Choosing Your Proxy below): proxy.xxx.broadvoice.com
    h. Out Bound Proxy (see Choosing Your Proxy below): proxy.xxx.broadvoice.com
    i. Use Outbound Proxy: Always
    j. Register: Always
    k. All other parameters may remain as provided by default

    Choosing your proxy
BroadVoice has seven proxy servers you can choose from. Try pinging them individually and pick the one with the shortest ping time. This is the name you enter identically in both the Sip Proxy AND Out Bound Proxy configuration options in the SIP Proxy section below.

    Example

  13. # ping proxy.lax.broadvoice.com
    PING proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=41 ms
    64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=2 ttl=47 time=31 ms
    64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=3 ttl=47 time=58 ms

Which ever proxy is closer (has a shorter ping time) is the proxy you want to use.
    Choose one from:

    • proxy.lax.broadvoice.com
    • proxy.dca.broadvoice.com
    • proxy.mia.broadvoice.com
    • proxy.atl.broadvoice.com
    • proxy.chi.broadvoice.com
    • proxy.bos.broadvoice.com
    • proxy.nyc.broadvoice.com

      XTen Proxy Settings
  14. Click BACK
  15. Click the X in the upper right corner to close the menu at any time. Otherwise, you may choose to edit other parameters.
  16. The X-Lite skin should now indicate "Logged In – Enter phone number."
  17. The X-Lite client should be fully exited when use of the client is complete. Otherwise, inbound calls will continue to be routed to your soft client as opposed to returning back to your BroadVoice adapter by default.

You can now make and receive calls using the X-Lite softphone client and your BroadVoice account. For best audio results, consider using a headset with microphone. This will help reduce the possibility of echo from adjacent speakers and microphone. The current release of X-Lite does not include an echo suppression application.

Remember, when dialing with X-Lite, if you set up any Proxies besides Default, you will need to add the specified Dialing Prefix to place calls through that proxy. Example: If you set up Proxy 1 to be another BroadVoice proxy server with Dialing Prefix configured to #1, you can place calls through that server by dialing #1 followed by the number.
